Iran has been supplying Russia with kamikaze drones that have caused much devastation against civilian infrastructure in Ukraine. And while the Russian forces have fired hundreds of the Shahed drones without mercy or regard for innocent human life, Ukraine has been able to intercept as many as it could using their skeleton defense systems. Besides the Iranian critical learning curve the Iran armed forces would be applying in future wars, the West has also to be concerned, as critically, about a stable defense system it can use to shoot down these drones without using million dollar missiles. Such, unfortunately, remains on the drawing board.
So while Iran is learning how to use their deadly drones efficiently, the west remains stuck in laboratories trying to find a reasonable solution to their destructive capabilities. This is the reason we believe the Biden Administration defensive posture lacks clarity and purpose. The United States should be considering eliminating the threat of Iranian drones all together. At the source and without any reservations.
Hélas, that’s not the mindset of President Biden whose approach to foreign policy, so far, has been more of a reactionary disposition than an active preventive one. The Ukrainians have been begging for the Patriot air defense system since May of 2022 and only now will they get one. Just about when Russia has crushed many of Ukrainian electric grids across the country.
So much for the courage and prescience of this administration.
incidentally, Shahed in Persian means “witness”. As in “witness” how Iran rains death on people and countries.
Under international law, Ukraine has every right to bomb, with little help from the United States, the Iranian drone factories in the heart of Iran.
WHY WAIT FOR A SOLUTION?
In a previous Blog, we advocated for the most definitive solution against the Iranian drone factories. One that would destroy their underground installations at the source as a means for Ukraine to defend against their offensive and illegal use on the European continent.
With this administration, please do not hold your breath. Such would not happen with the Biden Administration, which has assembled one of the most timid national security staff at the NSC Jake Sullivan heads today. Instead of defending the western world from the Shahed drone factories at the source, this administration would rather have a wait and see attitude to Iranian destructive capabilities. Regardless of the illegality of Iran entering a war with its weapons, thanks to Obama’s Iran Deal, it knows there would be little consequences for its meddling.
Spineless is the best way to describe Joe Biden’s presidency when it comes to foreign policy.
In the meantime, it is highly probable that the Pentagon has directed our military defense industry to create an inexpensive countermeasure against the Shahed drones. One that does not cost the arm and the leg to deploy.
As far as the defense industry is concerned, the variant systems the western world has developed for a variety of purposes do not solve the Shahed problem efficiently. Each defense system, from the German Gepard to the Turkish Alka, have their own limitations.
Like we said before, why wait for a solution. Under international law, Ukraine has every right to bomb, with little help from the United States, the Iranian drone factories in the heart of Iran.
The west needs to signal its willingness to up the ante against rogue countries whose respect for human life is of little interest or consequence.
