Americans Did Not Know What Accountability Looked Like

Most Americans know that many politicians lie and cheat, and some are outright criminals who break the law so often, it becomes a chronic ritual—Yes, we are talking about you Donald Trump. Frequently, though, Americans did not know what accountability looked like because almost all crooked politicians got away with murder. If you know you have the friends and the resources to skirt answerability, breaking the law becomes a routine that many nefarious politicians practice with ease. Their conscious absorbs their criminality without the blink of an eye.

However, ever since January 6, Americans are becoming more accustomed to watching the powerful and the mighty fall on their own swords. An unfamiliar territory for many that we welcome with open arms.

Such was on display on August 30 as Rudy Giuliani, who turned the lives of two election civil servants Ruby Freeman and Shaye Moss into hell, now must pay for defaming and character assassinating both. Two innocent ladies doing their jobs were the target of an unprincipled man who knew the damage he was causing. Why did Giuliani defame Freeman and Moss? Because he believed, like all powerful men who break the law routinely, that he can get away with it. He believed that the law will never hold him accountable for his repulsive actions.

He was wrong.

At least the Biden administration understands fully how accountability heals this nation.

GIULIANI IS RICH BUT CASH POOR

Rudy Giuliani is worth about $40 millions in assets and cash. Because of his troubles, he has become cash-poor, but remains wealthy by all standards. Recently, Giuliani has embarked on selling some of his assets to pay for his lawyers, and soon, hopefully, to pay millions to Ruby Freeman and Shaye Moss for unraveling their lives. Giuliani is selling his Manhattan apartment for $6.5m, which will certainly not be enough money to pay for his criminal behavior.

Should Giuliani go broke, Americans will begin to understand what accountability looks like when privileged men cheat, swindle, and harm people deliberately, but the law catches up with them eventually.

Is this a new beginning of holding the powerful accountable? Not sure yet. This blog is still waiting for the likes of Richard Sackler to finish his days in a prison cell. And maybe he will, now that accountability is becoming fashionable again.

SOOTHE THE ANGER

There is nothing like accountability to soothe the anger Americans are feeling from a country whose economic model has turned into a runway freight train that helps the rich to get richer. The Giuliani case will not make a dent to appease that anger, but, at least, Americans will begin to feel that we are heading towards the normalcy of a country ruled by law. Without seeing the powerful pay for their criminal behavior will only add to the misgivings and mistrust many feel towards a government whose main job has failed to protect the middle class from extreme greed.

At least the Biden administration understands fully how the pursuit of dishonorable civil servants and crooked men has the potential to appease the rage of Americans. Maybe, finally, the politicians are beginning to grasp the realities of what deep anger can do if left unattended through the continuation of past failed policies and practices.
