Portrait of a Bully and His Victim

Portrait of a Bully and His Victim

In the latest saga of Vladimir Putin slowly destroying Ukraine, as he has previously done four other times in the last 23 years, we are witness to history in real time. One that shows the portrait of a bully and his victim, or, to put it more bluntly, the portrait of Vladimir Putin bullying Joe Biden. One such historical moment just took place when Putin declared that all military aid to Ukraine are legitimate targets hoping, and for a good reason, his threats might restrain Joe Biden and strike fear in his heart. A fear that we have learned the last three weeks our President is subject to experiencing during these challenging times.

In the last three weeks, we learned two important facts: Vladimir Putin is a reborn Joseph Stalin, and Joseph Biden is no Winston Churchill. Europe has to burn before our President acts decisively to defeat Putin’s war machine.

Mind you, I admire the fact that Biden is unwilling to commit U.S. troops in Ukraine, but what I don’t understand is why he refused to deliver an air defense system to Ukraine months before the war.

PUTIN KNEW WHAT THE REST OF US DID NOT

No one had Biden’s inclinations analyzed. We knew, because of the tragic death of his son, that he is a man of peace. Which, put another way, says that he is a man who will not start wars, which is admirable. However, in the last three weeks, we also learned that he was never willing to defend against any brutal dictators no matter the cost to lives and materials. Putin is walking all over our President because he knew his nature better than any American might have guessed.

Putin’s invasion of Ukraine would not have happened under a strong-minded U.S. President.

There is a good chance that every reaction Biden exhibited to express his frustration with Putin’s war was one the Russian brute could predict. It’s like a master chess player playing with a novice 5-year old kid.

That aspect of Biden’s personality comes to us as a shock. Mind you, I admire the fact that Biden is unwilling to commit U.S. troops in Ukraine, but what I don’t understand is why he refused to deliver an air defense system to Ukraine months before the war. I don’t understand why he is reluctant to deliver heavier weapons today that could bury Putin in the Ukraine.

As NBC News puts it, a U.S. Official said “We did not want to provoke Putin“.

Great, what do you have to show for your fears, Mr. President? Putin invaded and your legacy is in tatters as a result.

Putin knew bullying Biden would work like a charm. And it did. Ukraine represents the portrait of a bully and his victim.

It’s this weakness in our resolve that Putin is exploiting today.

SHOULD HAVE. COULD HAVE. WOULD HAVE

U.S. foreign policy, in hindsight of the many mistakes the last three Presidents committed with regard to Ukraine, can be summarized as: Should have. Could have. Would have.

This is what Philip Breedlove, a retired four-star Air Force general and supreme allied commander of NATO during the 2014 Russian war on the Ukraine, told NBC when asked why we did not supply Ukraine with an air defense system:

“We certainly all missed an opportunity. The West, NATO and all of the individual nations involved missed an opportunity. I think we’re looking at it in retrospect now and thinking maybe we should have made a different decision.”NBC News by Ken Dilanian, Dan De Luce and Courtney Kube - February 23, 2022

It’s this weakness in our resolve that Putin is exploiting today. The worst part? We will make that mistake again. Guaranteed as the sun rises tomorrow.

Ukraine is lost. And maybe so will other eastern European countries.

In a TV appearance, Jake Sullivan, the National Security Adviser, was not exactly forceful about this issue. There has been no direct warning from Biden that should Putin threaten NATO, the alliance would respond with all the might of the U.S. and Europe.

Why no such strong language from our commander-in-chief?

Probably because he does not want to provoke his bully.
