The American Justice System Plays Favorites

Here are two stories that if one compares them side by side, one would come to the same conclusion that the American justice system plays favorites. It is an unfair system that allows the rich to get away with breaking any laws, yet imprisons those at the bottom of the ladder for the most minor of offenses. How can America play the champion of human rights on the world stage while it turns a blind eye to its own human rights abuses?

The hypocrisy is not escaping anyone. Such arguments hinder our diplomats and weaken our debates. We are a better country than that.

Our justice is blind. Blind to the fact that money buys it on the cheap.

THE STORY OF BILLIONAIRE MICHAEL STEINHARDT

ABC News published an article entitled: “A New York billionaire surrenders stolen antiquities worth $70M“. Apparently, one Michael Steinhardt knowingly purchased stolen antiquities that came from eleven different countries. After “negotiations” with the prosecutors in New York, this petty thief paid the ultimate price: He had to return the stolen goods. No sentencing, no indictment, and no prison time. Would he do it again? You bet he would.

Whatever the article mentioned, it is probably half the story. If I was a billionaire, I would pay millions to make sure my reputation is not as tarnished. I would spin the story in my favor and milk it for all its worth. My sense tells me that Mr. Steinhardt is a far worse human being than we are let to believe.

How can anyone trust our justice system when it treats the rich people differently that it treats the poor people? Our justice is blind. Blind to the fact that money buys it on the cheap.

America does not play fair or just. It plays the ultimate capitalist game by letting the rich monopolize our justice system.

THE STORY OF PENNYONAIRE FAIR WAYNE BRYANT

On the other side of the coin is a story that breaks your heart. Sadly, there is no need to write its synopsis, of NBC News wrote it for us already:

A Black man in Louisiana serving life in prison for stealing hedge clippers more than two decades ago was granted parole — months after the state’s Supreme Court declined to review his sentence. The Board of Pardons and Committee on Parole voted Thursday to release Fair Wayne Bryant, 63, records show. He walked out of prison later that day after serving more than 20 years at the state penitentiary in Angola, his attorney said.Reuters / NBC News by Minyvonne Burke - October 18, 2020

Twenty years in the racist State of Louisiana prison system for stealing a $10 hedge cutter. For stealing $70 millions or more from 11 different countries, you get to return the merchandise and walk away free. How do you fix such injustice?

Then our leaders wonder why so many Americans are so angry.

America does not play fair or just. It plays the ultimate capitalist game by letting the rich monopolize our justice system.
