A Speech Will Not Save Our Voting Rights

It is not hard to imagine President’s Biden strategy when he focuses entirely on the families and jobs in two separate bills. The anger seething below the surface as the middle class in this country melts away financially has awakened many in Washington once high officials realized how easy it is to channel that anger towards sinister purposes. As Trump did on January 6. Meanwhile, Republicans keep chewing away at our voting rights in plain sight. After much neglect on his part, finally President Biden is paying attention to this issue. However, a speech will not save our voting rights.

Who is to blame for this oversight? I would squarely place it at the feet of his Chief of Staff Ron Klain.

After all, any U.S. President is as good as the people that surround him.

Incidentally, Klain has yet to consider how serious it is to ignore the forgiveness of student debt to 45 million voters who demand it.

Big banks get all the breaks they lobby for in terms of corporate socialism (tax breaks, lower taxes, and big grants) while the people in America struggle to get heard. This is what I call lawless capitalism. It can only lead us down the wrong path.

Biden delivered a speech in support of voting rights. But a speech is not action. A speech does not save democracy.

NO DEMOCRACY WITHOUT VOTING RIGHTS

On January 6, the world witnessed how easy it is to shake our democracy. If you ask any German who survived WWII, they would tell you all it takes is one crazy man with cult-like following.

Today’s GOP is attempting to control elections so that only old whites with Anglo-Saxon blood control the country. Their counterparts need to either flip burgers, or if they are successful, pay their taxes without demanding power. That’s their deal. A Catholic Biden winning the presidency is the ultimate sin.

But that is not democracy when a small group of people (Alt-right Evangelical Republicans and White Supremacists) change the rules to favor election perpetuity. There is a point at which democracy breaks down under the weight of too much corruption and the singular obsession of rising to power and retaining it at any cost. The 64,000 question is: At what point?

The fact the White House has ignored this issue up is indicative of a bubble logic. The same assumptions bounce around in this vacuous limited space, which end up producing some bad math and ideas. As an example is the student debt issue the President keeps ignoring. This issue will come back to haunt him like the 1994 Crime Bill.

In this case, the assumption is that Biden would have to go against the interests of big banks that supported him for 40 years, while the truth of 45 million voters staying home next election cycle does not even make his assumption list. This explains Biden’s refusal to act.

In short, we cannot have a real democracy if the Republicans keep nibbling at our voting rights  because there is a breaking point at which the people would simply rise against the government for ignoring these rights. Especially if both political parties seem to ignore them.

Finally Biden is paying attention, but he must either fish or cut bait. This oscillating hammock he has the whole country swinging to its tune is giving Americans a case of sea sickness.

A SPEECH IS NOT ACTION

Biden delivered a speech in support of voting rights. But a speech is not action. A speech does not save democracy. So unless the President comes up with a plausible and sensible plan to protect voting rights, it would be a waste of time.

The most direct way to block the GOP from ever cheating the American public is to pass the For the People Act and make it a permanent federal law. Something that Biden is unwilling to fight for to get Senators Joe Manchin and Kyrsten Sinema on-board. To think that Biden has not twisted their arms up until now is reflective of his apathy towards this matter.

Ask the @DNC to pour $100 million in Arizona and West Virginia to put the pressure on both, and you will see how fast they will change their minds. And if they threaten to switch parties, let them flip to the GOP since the whole Senate remains under the grip of McConnell anyway. That move would help the Democrats in 2022.

The President’s speech was more a lecture than one with concrete action. The President should have spared us the wisdom because the country is looking for results, not speeches.
